Penguin Island

Penguin Island is only a 5 minute ferry trip away from Rockingham. 

The Island’s star attraction is the little penguins with a population of over 2000 making it the largest colony in WA. These penguins are the smallest breed of penguins in the world. They are also the only ones that live on Australia’s coastline.

The shy nature of these birds makes them difficult to spot during daylight hours. We were able to see 11 of them that have been raised in captivity on the Discovery Centre. So cute!

The island is also home to another 15 species of birds including cormorants, darters, terns, fairy terns, noddies, silver gulls, oystercatchers, ruddy turnstones, bar tailed godwit, Artic Skua, little eagles, ospreys, sea eagles and a large breeding colony of Australian pelicans.

These were thousands of seagulls, who would get really annoyed if you got anywhere near their nests (which were often just next to the walkway). Mean seagulls!
